Who can resist a great steak? Well, vegetarians I guess, but for beef eaters nothing tops the list like Calgary’s most iconic dish. These venerable restaurants take top quality meat and apply skilled and restrained techniques to serve something that’s simply delicious.

The Belvedere

A high-end establishment with nary a hint of stuffiess, this Stephen Avenue restaurant puts big, bold flavours on the plate with elegant sides and the wine list is pretty great too.

Caesars Steakhouse & Lounge

In its nearly 40 years, Caesar's Steakhouse & Lounge has perfected the ceremony of eating steak with ambience, decor and dishes that have remained relatively unchanged since it opened its doors in 1972.

512 4 Ave. S.W., 403-264-1222 and 110, 10816 Macleod Tr. S.E., caesarssteakhouse.com

Le Villa

With LeVilla's variety of cuts including tenderloin, strip loin and rib-eye and their specialty creations like the 10-oz New York strip loin steak Neptune, or the pan-seared aged Stilton steak made with a 6-oz tenderloin filet, it’s a sure winner in the southwest.

404, 1851 Sirocco Dr. S.W., 403-217-9699 and 150, 1800 4 St. S.W., 403-453-3670, levilla.ca

The Living Room

The Living Room, with its cozy atmosphere, contemporary design and sophisticated sharing menu, is the perfect place to slice into a 36-oz. bone-in Black Angus rib-eye with a special someone.

And speaking of sharing, this Italian eatery serves a steak — a huge Fiorentina rib steak — grilled perfectly and sliced for sharing. Rare and tender, it’s bistecca the way they do it in Italy.

2224 4 St. S.W., 403-263-5535 and 5000, 873 85 St. S.W., 403-263-6996, mercatogourmet.com

North 51° Steakhouse

If you think you can’t get food at the airport, you haven’t had a steak at North 51 in the Delta Calgary Hotel. Showcasing the best of Alberta in all its dishes, it’s only natural they’d serve a great steak.

The centerpiece of this Montgomery dining destination is the large grill and rotisserie, and it’s on the wood-fired grill that the steaks go — flatirons, New York striploins, rib eyes. They’re flavoured to perfection and served with hearty and homestyle side dishes.

Parkerhouse Grill & Winebar [Closed]

The menu might be New England-inspired but the beef is all Alberta, sourced from the best nearby farms. New York, tenderloin and rib eye, they’re all served with a cabernet reduction, whipped potatoes and seasonal vegetables.

Piq Niq [Closed]

Piq Niq’s intimate space is all Parisian charm, with an eating bar and cushy banquettes and French-inspired dishes. There’s only one steak on the menu, tenderloin, and that’s all you need.

Vintage Chophouse and Tavern

The winner of Avenue’s 2011 Best Steak award, this contemporary chop house offers nine different cuts of beef plus add-ons and sides to tailor your meal exactly the way you like it.
