5 Food Spots For Sports Watchers

Because watching sports is infinitely better from a barstool

Whether you play sports or watch them, it’s more fun when there are other people around. And beer. So when you’ve got an appetite as big as the next match, check out one of these local eateries.

Bookers BBQ Grill and Crabshack

With a rows of TVs behind the bar, Bookers is a great place for catching a game without going all in on the sports bar vibe. As the name suggests, Bookers does crabs, and they do them well, with crab buckets, cakes and chowder, in addition to a host of BBQ options and even bacon donuts for dessert.

Ship & Anchor

The soccer memorabilia speaks to the sports background that belies how trendy the Ship & Anchor has become. Watch the game on their screens while enjoying enjoying classic dishes like the lamb shank, chicken balti or shangahi noodles if you want something out of the ordinary, though you can still grab nachos and beers if you’re so inclined.

Flames Central

As the name suggests, this is the place to go anytime the Calgary Flames hit the ice. This converted theatre with a movie screen sized TV is decked with flames paraphernalia and offers standard bar fare including one pound servings of both wings and ribs. The huge main floor means this multifaceted venue welcomes both live shows and DJs to fill up the dance floor on occasion, so make sure you double-check the schedule before heading down.

Jamesons Pub

Jamesons’ shows most sports from UFC to NFL, and their menu features a lot of eclectic fare (for a pub, anyway) including lobster mac and cheese, Irish lamb and beef stew and a chicken pie served in a homemade puff pastry shell. They also offer Greek yogourt parfaits and egg white omelets for the health conscious.

Mug Shotz Sports Bar & Grill

The atmosphere is divey in the best sense of the word. There aren’t as many TVs as some other venues, but if you’re looking for that holy grail of sports bar food, the best wings in Calgary, Mug Shotz is the place to be, with a variety of unusual flavours like sticky Grand Marnier and mango chili for when plain old hot sauce leaves you cold.
