A Thanksgiving menu is pretty straightforward; we all know to get turkey, potatoes and pumpkin pie every year. What’s not as obvious is what pairs well with such a large meal. Here are five suggestions for getting the proper tannins at your Thanksgiving table.

2011 Selbach-Oster Zeltinger Himmelreich Riesling Kabinett Halbtrocken

A half-dry Riesling from the Mosel region of Germany, this wine is fruity but benefits from a bracing acidity that tempers said fruitiness. With notes of white peaches and citrus, it’s a great pairing for notoriously dry turkey meat.

$30.47 at Bin 905. 2311 4 St. S.W., 403-261-1600, bin905.com

2011 Andreas Bender Pinot Noir

An earthy, old world red with faint aromas of raspberry, sour strawberry and light chocolate. Produced in Pfalz, Germany by vintner Andreas Bender, this elegant Pinot will pair well with any seasonal feast.

2013 Clos de la Roilette Fleurie

This French red leaves an assortment of red berries on the lips, including strawberry and black cherry and has flowery qualities of violet and rose to its bouquet. The Gamay grape finds a traditional pairing with turkey.

2012 Ackermann Zeltinger Deutcheherrenberg Riesling Halbtrocken

Faintly sweet with notes of apple and pear to compliment the cranberry sauce, this Riesling is dry enough to mingle pleasantly with heavier thanksgiving fare and still hold its own.
$27 at Vinearts. 1310 1 St. S.W., 403-290-0700, vinearts.ca

2012 Fred Loimer “Fred” Zweigelt

A complex, medium-bodied Austrian wine with notes of tangy, fruity blackberry and currants, this bottle will compliment the spiced and sugary dishes sure to be splayed out on your table.
$24 at Metrovino. 722 11 Ave. S.W., 403-205-3356 metrovino.com
