Here's what you need to know about the latest food-related openings, news and events in Calgary.
Bridgeland's Blue Star Diner is giving Calgarians yet another reason to come for dinner with the launch of its new weekly specials. Stop by on Taco Tuesdays (featuring $3 tacos, $5 draft or bottle beer and $8 margaritas from 4:30 p.m. to close), Wednesdays for Burger + Beer (featuring any burger/sandwich with a draft or bottled beer for $20, and $5 draft and bottled beer) or during One for One Thursdays (featuring $1 per ounce wine glass pours from 4:30 p.m. to close).
You may have already tasted the beers of Calgary microbrewery Cold Garden Beverage Company on tap at local eateries like National on 10th and Home & Away, but now, you can also drink them in the brewery's new tasting room. The approximately 2,000-square-foot tasting room is located within Cold Garden's brewery in Inglewood (just look for the building with the turquoise roof behind the Smithbilt Hats building), and the team has definitely had some fun putting their own stamp on it. Colourful pool noodles cover the glycol lines and one of the bars, gold chains support the taplines and the tap handles are covered in astroturf. The beers are just as unique as the space, with selections like the East Calgary Lager, a Vanilla Cappuccino Porter and an Irish red ale called Red Smashed in Buffalo Jump. Stop by for a brewery tour, to fill up a growler or order a flight-ski (four small glasses of beer served on piece of a ski).
Alberta's brewing scene is getting better and more diverse all the time, and this month, you can taste it firsthand at National on 17th. The restaurant will be holding FeBREWary throughout the month of February, featuring a different local beer every day. Some of the featured breweries include Calgary's Banded Peak Brewing, Edmonton's Alley Kat and Lethbridge's Coulee Brew Co. (click here to see the full calendar). From Sunday to Thursday, beers from the featured brewery will be on special, and you'll be entered to win a prize if you order a pint from the featured brewery on Friday and Saturday.
The Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise's former Glacier Saloon certainly had its charms, but the dive-bar decor and pub-grub menu was a bit out of step with the rest of the elegant hotel. The space recently got a top-to-bottom update and re-opened for the winter season as Alpine Social. The makeover includes a new menu, which takes a more elevated approach to bar food with items such as slow-braised pork belly, confit duck and smoked chicken wings with house-made barbecue sauce. You can also get cheese and charcuterie boards, family-style meat cuts served with ancient grains and chimichurri and, for dessert, hot apple fritters with a dip of crème anglaise.

Now in its sixth year, the 2017 YYC Hot Chocolate Fest officially launched at the Calgary Farmers' Market on January 28th. This year's festival has more than 80 participating restaurants and cafes that have come up with tasty and unique hot chocolate drinks. For each drink that is purchased, some of the money will go towards Calgary Meals on Wheels. At the end of the month, two of the drinks will be named the best hot chocolate and best spirited hot chocolate in Calgary. Some of this year's hot chocolate drinks include a citrus ginger orange hot chocolate from Monogram, a lavendar white hot chocolate from Wild & Raw and Blanco's Chocoloca (which features tequila) from Blanco Cantina.
