Best Small Plates
The top 3 from Avenue Calgary's 2013 Best Restaurant Awards.
1. Candela [now closed]
New to Calgary’s dining scene, Candela has created a lot of buzz with its small-plates menu that pulls from a number of international cuisines. Dishes at this tastefully decorated spot in Mission feature flavours from Morocco, Spain and Asia; all are shareable, and most are less than $10. The menu is wide-ranging, and there are creative cocktails, to boot. With Candela, Uri Heilik and chef Rogelio Herrera — the two behind perennial favourite Alloy — have created a place with broad appeal.
At Anju, chef Roy Oh dishes up a modern take on Korean small plates, from his gochujang wings to a tofu dish that would have the most hardened carnivore ordering more.
3. Vin Room
The wine may be the thing here, but do not underestimate the wine-friendly dishes that run the gamut of rustic, refined, quirky and classic.
