New Restaurant: Ca’puccini

The new cafe and restaurant from Teatro is now open in Arts Commons.

Clearly having the cafe formula down-pat with Vendome Cafe in Sunnyside, The Teatro Group has recently opened a new casual eatery called Ca’puccini in Arts Commons (formerly Epcor Centre for the Performing Arts). A bit more polished than Vendome in terms of looks, the new spot caters to the downtown crowds by offering everything from coffee and breakfast sandwiches to wine, beer and more home-style dishes like freshly made papparedelle and meatballs or rigatoni mushroom ragu.

The space is set-up into two separate areas, similar to how the former tenant Baraka was set up. Both spaces are bright white with black accent walls. It has a few tables as well as neon yellow florescent bar stools for a little pop of colour. On the east side, you’ll find the grab-and-go counter where you can order a drink, pick-up a pre-packaged sandwich or salad and head out the door. If you’ve got a few minutes to spare, there’s seats all along the u-shaped bar that wraps around the majority of the room. On the west side, there’s an open kitchen where the team prepares the pastas and other more sit-down style food and plenty of tables to sit down with coworkers.

The advantage of having its older brother, Teatro, right across the road is a great one. The restaurant’s pastry department prepares bread daily for the sandwiches at Ca’puccini, as well as cured meats (made by Teatro’s charcuterie team) to fill them up. In terms of coffee, it’s the usual suspects here – brewed coffee, lattes, Americanos. There is nothing too out of the ordinary, but after all, 8th Avenue is a busy spot during the work week and we don’t all have time to wait for a pour-over or the syphon process just to get our daily intake of caffeine.

Another nice thing to note is that in the evenings, Ca’puccini stays open until 10 p.m. during performance nights for people wanting either an apres-work beverage or somewhere to sit and enjoy a bite to eat before whichever theatre productions may be taking place later in the evening.
