How-to Patio Crawl in Kensington

Organize your day in Kensington by the patios you’re going to relax at.

Pub crawls aren’t for everyone, but you’d be hard-pressed to find someone who is fervently against dining and drinking alfresco on a warm weekend. Enter, the patio crawl.

When planning a patio crawl, pick venues that are shaded (you don’t want heat exhaustion early in the crawl), that are in close proximity to each other (so that time eating hors d’oeuvres is maximized) and that offer something special that is impossible to say no to (like drinking out of a coconut).

Here are five patios to crawl in Kensington.

Oolong Tea House

Start your day in Kensington at the hidden patio at Oolong Tea House. It faces east, away from the hustle and bustle of the main road, making it a calm and relaxed patio for catching up with friends over a cup of tea. (There are more than 150 loose-leaf varieties to choose from.) The patio is also completely shaded, so you won’t get sunburned and overheated too soon into the patio crawl.

Container Bar

When lunchtime rolls around, head to Container Bar. It’s only open for lunch during July and August, so take advantage of that little perk while you can. It’s also one of the few places in Calgary where you can get a cocktail in a coconut. And since this patio was designed to feel like it’s far from Calgary, inspired by beach house bars in countries throughout Southeast Asia (among other places), this is perfectly fitting.

Kensington Pub

This patio sits 16 at most, so arrive here in the early to mid-afternoon. It’s a low-key, shaded patio in a landmark building that wouldn’t be out of place in the English countryside.

(Or, if this patio is already full, try one of Yardhouse‘s two patios – there are drink specials here just about every day of the week.)

Chef’s Table

Make a reservation to have dinner on this patio. Chef’s Table offers tasting menus every day of the week: the three-course tasting menus run from Monday to Thursday and cost $59 per person; the five-course tasting menu is on Saturdays and Sundays and costs $98 per person.

Winebar Kensington

Finish your Kensington patio crawl at Winebar. The patio, located in a parking spot right outside the restaurant on Kensington Road, is the newest patio addition to the neighbourhood. It’s open late and there’s wine. Lots of wine. And because it’s wide open, it has a fun, social vibe, a nice contrast to the secluded patios you started the day at.
