New Restaurant: The Loop

Marda Loop welcomes a great new brunch spot that does lunch and dinner too

The Loop’s Stuffed Uncle Garth Burger is one double decker of a reason to try this Marda Loop eatery.

Let’s face it, we all know where to find a good breakfast in this city. Each neighbourhood has its gems – and its line-ups out the door – and Marda Loop is no exception. The Loop (sister restaurant to Mission Diner) is known for a quality brunch, but now with a refreshed look and revision of the menu, this restaurant is helping make Marda Loop more of a dining destination whether you’re craving breakfast, lunch or dinner.

In the mornings, of course The Loop offers standards like Bennys, French toast and waffles, but what’s nice is that the eatery boasts a fairly extensive menu that extends well beyond the brunching hour. I’m a sucker for deep-fried mozzarella sticks (everything in moderation, folks), so if you feel like you’d be addicted to gooey cheese encased in a crispy outer shell too, then an order of these should definitely hit your table before the main dishes arrive.

Recently, the space was given a much-welcomed facelift by popular local designer Alykhan Velji. The result is a bright, open space that is contrasted by dark walls decorated with empty pictures frame and mirrors, that gives the room an eclectic sort of feel. The dining room is a cozy size, with about 50 seats, but the tables are nicely spaced so you and your friends won’t be knocking elbows during a meal.

Alykhan Velji helped design the new space.

For dinner, you can opt for anything from spicy fish tacos to moules frites and a mac ‘n’ cheese made with mozzarella, gruyere and cheddar, but if you’re really hungry, than one of The Loop’s homemade burgers is likely in order. The Stuffed Uncle Garth Burger is a mammoth of a meal that comes loaded with avocado, crispy bacon, ham, pork shoulder, pickled onions and more. Bun-to-burger ratio is always an important thing and this one does not disappoint. It goes without saying, this is a messy meal to have, so if you’re wearing white silk maybe go for something like the crab cakes with lemon caper aioli or the summer lobster salad.

Lobster salad.

When it comes to the drinks, The Loop offers a great mix of mimosas like the Hibiscus Mimosa with cranberry and prosecco, caesars like the lime tequila caesar (a sure-fire cure for the Sunday morning headache). Then there’s bottled beer, draught and a surprisingly decent wine selection available by the glass or bottle.

While it’s still gorgeous outside, it might be a good idea to make use of the restaurant’s spacious patio to soak up some summer sun and enjoy a few drinks. That’s an order!
