Satisfy all carnivorous desires at this restaurant on Edmonton Trail

As the name may imply, this refined, Western-themed eatery is all about the meat.

With game meats like elk, wild boar, bison and, of course, Alberta beef, Open Range highlights some of the best ingredients our province has to offer – and chef/owner Dwayne Ennest has been doing it since way before it was trendy.

Before succumbing completely to your carnivorous cravings, start off dinner here with the three-bean dip with sorrel pesto and grilled flatbread, or the crispy corn and jalapeno fritters served with a tomatillo honey sauce for dipping.

Move on to something from the sea like the sturgeon steak in a wine-braised tomato sauce with horseradish, or try something from the range like Ennest’s local elk Dianne, finished with currant demi-glaze.

Responding to Calgarians’ insatiable cravings for beef, Ennest offers his diners a hard-to-come-by Porterhouse steak, which is 24 oz. of meat served up with a healthy portion of chimichurri sauce.

If you still aren’t feeling full after all this, try a slice of maple bourbon pecan pie with one of Open Range’s coffees made with maple whiskey and Frangelico.

For larger groups, Open Range offers three private dining rooms, with the added ability to order off the menu from its sister establishment next door, Big Fish. Last, but not least, on Sunday nights, you can swing by the restaurant to treat yourself to a three-course dinner featuring some of the best prime rib you can find around town.
