It’s no secret that Calgary shops carry tons of great products. But at some, you can also find product lines created, designed and/or made by the store owners themselves. Whether you’re looking for lotion, jewellery, a Japanese knife a or even a wedding dress, you can find ones with a local connection at these stores.

The Apothecary in Inglewood

Inside this small Inglewood shop, you’ll find All Things Jill, a body care product line created by store owner Jill Hawker. The made-in-house line features products for body care, yoga, natural dog care, mom and baby, men and more. The store also recently started carrying its own brand of essential oils, which are all bottled and labeled in-house. There are more than 80 scents to choose from, which can be turned into a personal perfume, massage oil, put in a scent diffuser and more.

Ethos Bridal

Everyone wants to look unique and beautiful on their wedding day. But if you’re looking for something a bit different, consider the Anna Rose collection (a wedding dress line designed by store co-owner Haya Stein) at Ethos Bridal. The line features 12 different designs ranging in style from princess to fit and flare and in materials like lace and organza. And if you want to create something particularly custom, you can also mix and match different dress tops and bottoms from the line to create a whole new dress.

Frilly Lilly

This local spa chain is the place to go for your waxing, manicure and pedicure needs. But it also has its own body, bath and skin care products created by Frilly Lilly founder Debra Van Dyke. There are plenty of options to choose from, with body butters, candles, cleansers, perfumes, lotions and more all available in beautiful feminine scents. Some of their most popular products include the bikini care solution and the drying lotion for ingrown hairs.

Inspirati

In 2015, Inspirati debuted its own line of basic linen napkins and tablecloths designed by store owner Wendy Brownie. Both feature an elegant finish with mitered corners and a bordered edge, and use high quality linen suitable for everyday and special occasions. The napkins and tablecloths are available in neutral colours like black, white, grey and a natural linen colour, as well as fuchsia pink and burgundy. They can be added to existing linens or coordinated with other linens available in-store.

Kartar

Recently transitioning their retail space into a by appointment studio and workshop, Kartar is home to the work of many notable Alberta designers, including Adrian Martinus, Made in House and onetwosix. But there’s also Mtharu, the contemporary furniture line of store owner Sumer Singh. Pushing the boundaries of design, the line features chairs, tables, shelves and sofas in a range of colours and materials.

Knifewear

Knifewear is known for its impressive selection of Japanese knives. But if you’re looking for one with a particularly local touch, take a look at their nine Masakage lines. Knifewear owner Kevin Kent collaborated with Japanese knife sharpener Takayuki Shibata on these, with Kent contributing to the design of the knives’ shape, weight, type of handle and aesthetic of the blade. The knives are made with different materials and by different master blacksmiths. They’re also designed to suit Canadian cuisine, and each one has its own unique look. In February, all the Masakage knife lines are 15% off at Knifewear.

The Livery Shop

Along with a ton of other cool home and lifestyle products, The Livery Shop is home to not one, but two local product lines. The store is owned by the pair behind CoutuKitsch (Dorian Kitsch and Kofi Oteng) and Camp Brand Goods (Connor and Leslie Gould), and their respective lines of jewellery and clothing are available in-store. With CoutuKitsch, you can expect handcrafted statement jewellery that often features materials such as quartz and chain. Camp Brand Goods, on the other hand, sells men’s and women’s shirts, fleece sweaters and toques, all featuring different versions of the stylish Camp logo.

Nikola

Before Sonja McDowell opened her storefront, she was one of the first vendors of the Calgary Farmers’ Market in Currie Barracks. Today, you can find her wares at Nikola, her clothing store in Mission that specializes in clothing with natural fibres. Along with clothing from brands like Bryn Walker and Cut Loose, the store sells McDowell’s handmade sterling silver and gemstone jewellery. The chunky necklaces and bracelets are real statement pieces. And just like when she was at the Farmers’ Market, McDowell also continues to embellish both new and up-cycled vintage denim jackets with silks and velvets.
