Behind-the-Scenes of Avenue's 2016 Fashion Photoshoots

We take a look back at all our fashion shoots from 2016 and share some behind-the-scenes photos and stories from each.

For this shoot we wanted to have this feeling of bored office workers wearing amazing clothing. Here, our model Mariah from Images Models has this perfect deadpan look and in this shot she uses it to full effect while wearing the most luxurious Michael Kors Collection outfit. To get an office-y environment, we built fake walls and furnished the set with items from all over Calgary. It was a lot of work, but it was worth it.

Several elements came together for this epic shoot — including the perfect, vintage location. The fashion, styled by Kara Chomistek, had this retro vibe so we wanted to shoot in a home that was a perfectly preserved, untouched by a modern decorator's touch. We did some digging around on, and came across this gem of a home. After some "pretty pleases" and sincere promises that we'd return the home to the owner in tip-top condition, we were granted total access. One thing that endeared me to the house was its collection of cat art. I snapped a shot of this regal cat in Medici-style garb.

What to Wear Now

April 2016

Chanel top and skirt, prices upon request, Chanel Airlines handbag, $2,500, headband, $1,475, all from Chanel. Beauty note: Kat Von D Studded Kiss lipstick in Halo, $26, from Sephora.

It has become an April tradition that stylist Leah Van Loon and I collaborate on a spring trend fashion shoot. In 2016, we wanted to add hair and beauty trends to the mix. Sephora graciously sent us a huge assortment of matte lip colours by Marc Jacobs and Kat Von D (the master of the matte lip), which was masterfully applied by makeup artist Nickol Walkemeyer.

Women's Power Suits For Work and Play

May 2016

Michael Kors Collection trench, US$5,995, and belt, price upon request, both from Michael Kors; bodysuit, $100, from Nordstrom.

In the May issue we photographed local model extraordinaire Kim Noseworthy. In this photo, hair stylist Michelle Lazo, makeup artist Caro Schmaltz and Avenue's senior art director Venessa Brewer are hard at work on Noseworthy's hair and makeup. It might look staged, but this really happened. Our timelines are so short (even though we often pull ten hour days for a photo shoot), we can't spare any extra time being idle. Not featured in this photo are photographer Jared Bautista and stylists Phaedra Godchild and Brenna Hardy of Styleista hard at work making sure the clothing and set is ready for the model.

I can't think of a better way to spend a day than with a talented team at the Leighton Art Centre. It's just a short drive from the city and the views are spectacular. I snapped this panoramic shot moments before the clouds opened up and halted shooting for several minutes.

The big fashion trend of fall 2016 was the bow. They were everywhere — the bigger and poofier the better. One of the most coveted pieces we shot for this editorial was the lace Chanel dress pictured above, with its romantic layers and piles of divine costume jewellery — punctuated by, of course, a striking black bow. I thought it was apropos that inside the Memorial Park Library, where our team camped out for the day, was this photo of the Annie Davidson, the Calgary Library's first major benefactor. She's wearing a bow not unlike the ones we shot that day and her style shows that what was old is new again.

Model Heather Marks Comes Home

Working with Heather Marks on the October 2016 fashion shoot was a dream come true. Not only did we get to work with one of the most successful models to ever come out of Calgary, esteemed Calgary-based photographer Gerard Yunker was behind the lens. The results were nothing short of magnificent.

Denise Clarke's Luxe Holiday Fashion

December 2016

photography by Jared Bautista; styling by Phaedra Godchild and Brenna Hardy (Styleista); hair by Kimberly Seibel (Hedkandi); makeup by Caro Schmaltz. Location sourced through real estate agent Gord McArthur,

There's something so decadently wonderful about this shot of local performer Denise Clarke dipping her feet into the pool, with velvet Saint Laurent shoes nearby. The day was enlivened by Clarke's can-do attitude and sparkling personality.
