Getting to Know Teri Salazar

With the Calgary Home + Design Show set to start this week, we get to know the woman who puts it all together

Turns out the Calgary Home + Design Show show manager has a thing for karaoke and hosts an annual Iron Chef party for 20 of her closest friends. Here’s what else we learned when we asked her to complete a few sentences.

I grew up in…

Prince George, B.C., and then moved to Spruce Grove when I was 13. I have lived in Calgary for 8 years.

My childhood ambition was…

to be a pop star. Anyone who has heard me sing knows that this was a very lofty goal.

My first job was…

working in a laundromat for $4.50 per hour. I’m aging myself…

My current job is…

Show Manager for the Calgary Home + Design Show and Calgary Home + Garden Show.

I like to vacation in…

Peru. My husband’s family is from Peru and we try to visit every couple of years. It is where I am truly most happy and most relaxed. Hand me a pisco sour and some Peruvian food – heaven.

My culinary speciality is…

to cook anything and everything. Every year for my birthday, I host an Iron Chef party with a different key ingredient and 20 of my closest friends. Last year I made a poutine fois gras grilled cheese sandwich with homemade spicy ketchup.

Netflix thinks I am…

a mother of two little kids. Or a detective.

The last three design or decor-related items I purchased were…

the most amazing side tables from West Elm: the Marlow Round Ring Side Table and the Tangier Bronze Stool, which I decided to use as a side table instead. I love how unique they are and the openness of both pieces makes my space look bigger. I’m also obsessed with my outdoor slab dining table from Revolve Furnishings. The hard lines add edginess to my outdoor entertaining space.

I get my design inspiration from…

our exhibitors at the Calgary Home + Design Show and my coworkers. The girls I work with are so creative and have such amazing design style, I’m constantly trying to keep up!

The most ridiculous decor trend I ever followed was…

matching furniture pieces. I have recently shed my neurotic need to be matchy and my home has come together in such an interesting, eclectic way as a result.

My guilty pleasure is…

karaoke (see pop star dreams).

The most important piece of design advice I’ve ever received was…

don’t buy something unless you LOVE it. And if you love it, it will work in your house even if it looks different than everything else.

I’d love to meet…

Jimmy Fallon.

At least once in their life, every person should try…

Have I mentioned karaoke?

My fondest Calgary memory is…

watching our community come together after the floods. I have never been more proud to call this city home. We are a city full of hard-working and ambitious people, and that’s never been more evident to me than in the weeks following the floods.

No Calgary day is complete without…

a drive home looking at the beautiful mountains. What a way to end the day.

The Calgary Home + Design Show runs from September 18 to 21. Visit calgaryhds.com for details.
