Calgary is already home to food trucks, a book truck and a fashion truck. And now, it has also has a flower truck.

Prairie Girl Flowers, a mobile flower truck owned and run by Becky Feasby, is hitting the street for the first time at Lilac Festival this weekend. The concept is similar to that of a food truck, wherein the truck will pop up at local festivals and events in the city, but it will be selling flowers out of the truck window instead of food.

Flower trucks have surfaced in places like New York City, Nashville, Hamilton and Regina, but this will be Calgary’s first one. Feasby, who has a background in residential landscaping, landscape design and horticultural therapy, is focusing specifically on Alberta- and B.C.-grown flowers.

“I really want to change the way we look at fresh flowers, how we think about them and where they come from,” Feasby says.

“The flower truck idea was really appealing to me [because] I didn’t want a brick and mortar shop. I thought, you know, I can sort of spread my love of flowers and my message of sustainability on the roads of Calgary.”

So last October, Feasby bought a 1998 Chevrolet van from a food truck company off Kijiji and added a floral cooler and custom shelves. The truck also got a fresh coat of teal paint and a floral vinyl designed by local tattoo artist Dominique Labelle of Gypsy Rose Tattoos & Piercing.

So what can you buy from a flower truck? Well, just like a food truck has several dishes to choose from, Feasby will be offering several floral creations. Shoppers can pick up bouquets in a variety of sizes, potted succulents and plants, floral hair pieces and leather or brass cuffs with real flowers on them. There will even be floral tattoos, which Feasby makes by adhering fresh flowers to kinesiology tape that will move with your body.

While Feasby’s selection of Alberta and B.C. flowers will change regularly depending on the season, some of the flowers that will be available at Lilac Festival include allium, peonies, lady’s mantle, lilacs and other greenery. The bouquet stems will be wrapped in a compostable Eco Fresh wrap to keep the stems hydrated while you wander the festival.

After Lilac Fest, you can expect to see Prairie Girl Flowers at the Inglewood Night Market and other local festivals this summer.
