In November and December, Calgary's arts scene is full of heartwarming Christmas stories, soaring holiday music and touching dance numbers. Here are seven theatre, music and dance productions that will get you in the holiday spirit this year.
When: November 23 to December 24
Attending a production of A Christmas Carol might just be one of the biggest holiday traditions around. This year, Theatre Calgary will once again stage the classic Christmas story from November 23 to December 24 in the Max Bell Theatre in Arts Commons. For those who aren't familiar with the tale by Charles Dickens, the story focuses on a grumpy old man named Ebenezer Scrooge who is visited by the ghosts of Christmas past, present and yet to come on Christmas Eve. Check it out if only to see local actor Stephen Hair's take on the role of Ebenezer Scrooge, which he's been playing for 24 years.

This isn't your typical holiday play. Originally an essay written by David Sedaris, this one-act adaptation of The Santaland Diaries looks at one man's wacky experience working as a Christmas elf named Crumpet at Santaland Village in Macy's department store. Catch a performance of the one-man comedy during your lunch break (at noon) from Monday to Saturday, or a 6 p.m. evening performance on Thursdays and Fridays.

Featuring the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra and the Calgary Girls Choir, A Traditional Christmas is the first event in the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra's The Magic of Christmas Series. Grace Presbyterian Church will be filled with the sounds of your favourite holiday songs during this event. Other holiday-time performances by the CPO in December include Handel's Messiah, the Sing-Along Messiah event and A Swinging Little Christmas with Tony Desare.

This might just be the only holiday production where you can get away with wearing your pyjamas — in fact, there will even be a prize for whoever wears the best festive onesie. At this one-night production by Cowtown Opera, expect a mix of performances by the local opera company's professional opera singers and its children's chorus, as well as appearances by people like Andrew Phung of the CBC sitcom Kim's Convenience. The Heebee-jeebees, a local acapella group, will act as hosts during A Cowtown Christmas, which runs from 7:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. on December 9.

Alberta Ballet's The Nutcracker is another holiday classic, telling the story of a young girl named Clara whose wooden nutcracker magically comes to life on Christmas Eve. More than 70 ballet dancers will perform the choreography by Alberta Ballet's Edmund Stripe, while the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra and Edmonton Symphony Orchestra will be performing the score by Russian composer Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky live. The Nutcracker runs from December 15 to 17 and 21 to 24.

Frank Sinatra and Christmas tunes might just be the perfect musical combination. You can hear both at the Calgary Jazz Orchestra's Perfectly Frank Christmas performance this year, which takes place on December 17 at 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. If that isn't enough Christmas jazz in your life, the orchestra is also doing a Christmas with the Calgary Jazz Orchestra night on December 1.
