Calgary’s live music scene is firing on all cylinders, with worthy shows happening every night. But when a tempting gig takes place on a weeknight, there’s a bit of a dilemma: Do you pass it up in favour of a good night’s sleep and being sharp for work or school in the morning? Or do you throw caution to the wind, have a great time – then pay the price the next day?

Tuesday evening at the Ironwood promises to be the best of all worlds, with two accomplished and exciting Calgary bands rocking the stage to benefit charity – and the show wrapping up by 11 p.m.

“This is going to be great,” says Jamie Gould, lead singer and creative force behind synth-driven retro-new-wave practitioners The Jamies. “I love doing stuff like this.” She’s equally in love with the sound of The Jamies’ freshly recorded new album, tentatively titled “Time” and set for a May 23 release.

“Our first album (2013’s “The Jamies“) was transitional – it still had some elements of who we used to be – but this one is really who we are. It’s pop, and it’s powerful.”

The band itself has gone through a couple of reconfigurations, and now features twin keyboards along with bass, drums and vocals. The edgy interplay between two synths is the perfect setting for The Jamies’ danceable ’80s-inspired music.

“We have been getting such positive reactions from crowds,” says Gould, whose recent schedule has seen the band playing well-received shows in Edmonton and Lethbridge as well as locally. “People are dancing to songs they’ve never heard before.”

The Jamies will take the stage at 8:00, followed by veteran quintet Twenty Centuries of Stony Sleep, whose current release, the EP “She Dreamed a Drought,” showcases a highly accessible guitar-powered Canadian rock sound that will find receptive ears with fans of Sloan, the Northern Pikes, Rusty, 54-40, the Grapes of Wrath and even Blue Rodeo.

The icing on the cake is that the show is a benefit to provide books and school supplies for needy children in South Sudan.
