Steve Coffey is what’s known as a multi-disciplinary artist. Following in the footsteps of one of his heroes, Joni Mitchell, Coffey is an accomplished singer-songwriter with several albums under his belt as well as a painter represented in Calgary by the Collector’s Gallery of Art.

The expansive Southern Alberta landscape provides a key source of inspiration for Coffey, who resides in Vulcan, Alta. “My whole exploration is built on what’s around me, the landscape and the sky,” he says. “I use the sky in a very abstract way. It’s my freedom palette.”

Coffey’s newest visual explorations of the Southern Alberta landscape will be on the walls at Collector’s Gallery through the month of December. He’s been represented by the Gallery for approximately four years. He describes this latest crop of paintings as being more “zen-like” than the work he displayed at his last feature exhibition two years ago, which he describes as “stormy and tumultuous” on account of the personal struggles he was dealing with at the time.

The son of a touring musician, Coffey grew up around bands and songwriting, while training academically as a visual artist. Despite that key difference, he sees both his painting and his music as coming from the same place. “They almost feed each other,” he says. “The energy that goes into a performance, there’s a certain similarity to the energy that goes onto the canvas.”

Coffey’s Calgary fans will get to experience both of his artistic expressions this month. Prior to the opening of his Collector’s Gallery exhibition on Saturday, Nov. 30, he’ll be playing the Ironwood Stage and Grill on Saturday, Nov. 23 with his trusty band The Lokels. The Inglewood-based venue is a perfect fit with the band’s folk-roots style and the set will draw from the eight albums the band has put out together over the past eight years. The Ironwood doesn’t sell tickets in advance, but charges cover to patrons’ tabs. For seating reservations call 403-269-5581.
