Calgary's Best Neighbourhoods 2011: Wildwood

This quiet community in Calgary's Southwest earned 2nd place in this year's survey.

Most Calgarians don’t know about Wildwood and that’s just fine with its residents.

Hidden on the north side of Bow Trail, bookended by 37th Street S.W. and Sarcee Trail — it’s easy to see why this neighbourhood is often forgotten.

There are only a few roads going into Wildwood, which keeps drive-through traffic down to a minimum.

“People usually only enter Wildwood because they live here or they have friends who live here,” jokes Wildwood Community Association vice-president Quinten Beasley.

The lack of cut-through traffic makes Wildwood a pedestrian-friendly neighbourhood where residents can stroll without the annoyance of cars buzzing by (except perhaps on Spruce Drive). This results in more people spending time outdoors, chatting with neighbours, which helps to make Wildwood one of the friendliest neighbourhoods in Calgary.

“Since we’re outside so much, it gives us more opportunities to meet and build friendships,” says Beasley. “Wildwood is one of the few neighbourhoods I’ve lived in where I know all the neighbours on my street.”

Wildwood is also right next to the Bow River park and pathway system and, in the northwest corner of the community is Edworthy Park, a popular place with picnickers and dog walkers. The neighbourhood is also only a 10-minute drive to downtown Calgary and by the end of next year it’ll have the nearby Westbrook LRT station to whisk residents to and from the core.

But keep all of these things to yourself. After all, Wildwood likes to keep itself a secret.
