Calgary's Top 5 Pedestrian-Friendly Neighbourhoods

In our city-wide survey, walkability tied with short commute time as the most desirable factor in a neighbourhood.

According to Avenue’s city-wide community survey, the pedestrian-friendliness of a neighbourhood tied with short commute time as the most desirable factor in a neighbourhood. Each neighbourhood was rated on walkability as reported by community residents. These five neighbourhoods scored top marks.

1. Rosedale
Ideally situated with easy walking proximity to downtown, the river pathway system, the shops of 16th Avenue N.W., as well as SAIT Polytechnic and the Alberta College of Art + Design, Rosedale is a pedestrian paradise of tree-lined streets. And being close to an LRT station adds even more city access for those
who eschew cars.

2. Sunnyside
Adjacent to the Kensington shopping district and downtown, it’s no surprise Sunnyside scored high marks. It’s a great inner city community to jaunt around by foot, with an LRT station on its doorstep. While traffic arteries such as 10th Street N.W. and Memorial Drive border Sunnyside, the City has taken steps to reduce traffic flow in the residential area, making the streets walkable and safe, despite their proximity to the downtown core.

3. Hillhurst
Much like its sister community of Sunnyside, the northwest neighbourhood of Hillhurst is within walking distance to downtown. Its proximity to the Bow River pathway system and Kensington shopping area make it a great place for pedestrians
to stroll.

4. Parkhill/Stanley Park
Located on the Elbow River, this community offers paved river pathways that connect to the Bow River pathway system and funnel bike and pedestrian commuters to downtown, as well as to the 4th Street S.W. shopping area.

5. Crescent Heights
Walking along the Crescent Heights escarpment is so pleasant on a summery day, many Calgarians drive to this neighbourhood to enjoy what residents have all the time. With easy-walking access to downtown and the Bow River pathway, Crescent Heights shares in what its adjoining neighbourhoods also boast about.
