Safety tied for second place with friendliness of neighbours as the most desirable factor in Avenue’s city-wide community survey.
We rated neighbourhood safety not just on the amount of crime actually taking place, but on how safe residents reported they feel living and playing there. All of the five-safest neighbourhoods had a crime rate below 0.02 reported crimes per person for 2009 and received a rating of more than 6 out of 7 by residents surveyed who were in agreement with the statement “my neighbourhood has a low crime rate and feels very safe.”
1. Discovery Ridge
Located south of Glenmore Trail and west of 69th Street S.W., Discovery Ridge is a community predominated by young families with children living at home. To keep their neighbourhood safe, residents have a Block Parent Association group. Only 20 incidents of crime were reported in the area last year, most of which were general mischief complaints such as vandalism. Residents gave the community a rating
of 6.5 out of 7 for feeling safe.
2. Edgemont
This neighbourhood west of Nose Hill Park has a centrally located community hall (The Edgemont Centre), which may contribute to keeping crime low. Residents gave their neighbourhood a rating of 6.4 out of 7 for feeling safe. This community of young families had 209 incidents of crime reported to the Calgary Police Service (CPS) in 2009 (making their crime per capita 0.012), the majority of which were mischief related.
3. Tuscany
Located on a hill near the junction of Crowchild and Stoney trails in the northwest, this community is bustling with children. There are more than a dozen local schools (elementary through high school) located in the vicinity, as well as a wealth of clubs, sports associations and after-school activity groups to keep kids safe and involved in their community. The CPS reported 182 incidents of crime in 2009 (making the crime per capita only 0.013), most of which were mischief related.
4. Evergreen
Located in the deep southwest of Calgary, Evergreen is next to the beautiful Fish Creek Provincial Park. This community has a Six Pack Plan, which encourages neighbours to sign up in groups of six to create connections with each other. The area rarely deals with serious crime: 131 incidents were reported by CPS in 2009, (making the crime per capita 0.012), most of which were mischief related.
5. Springbank Hill
West of Signal Hill on the edge of the city, this is a picturesque, semi-rural neighbourhood, with a community association whose vision is to create a “safe and desirable community.” And its hard work seems to be paying off — residents ranked the community 6.1 out of 7 for feeling safe. They have a Block Parent program. There were 69 incidents of crime reported by CPS in 2009, all of which, aside from four cases of assault, were mischief related.
