Community Natural Foods’ 10 Avenue S.W. location has warmed up the atmosphere of its cafe with a semi-open kitchen, a brand new salad bar and an FSC approved arbour ceiling. And matching the cafe's bright and environmentally conscious redesign is a new menu by accomplished Calgary chef Lisa Cheah.
Focusing on using organic and local options wherever possible, the menu boasts a juice and smoothie bar, pizza by the slice, hot sandwiches and a build-your-own burrito station with tons of fresh produce.
"I really pushed my own agenda with food philosophy for this menu," said Cheah. "There are so many Alberta producers to draw from and we wanted to showcase their product."
With 15 years of experience in the field, Cheah’s made connections with the best local producers around. The cafe is using meat from Hoven Farms and Winter's Turkeys, and also including products from smaller local producers like mustard from Brassica Mustard, wheatgrass from Hotchkiss Produce and gouda from Sylvan Star Cheese.
Some of the cafe's original menu, like its chick pea curry and vegetarian chili, will remain, and according to Cheah, the hot buffet will change slightly throughout the year to accommodate the seasons. But with options like the tofu marinara sandwich or the sourdough crust pizza slices, it’s hard to imagine them getting the same kind of attention as before.
