Design and Decor for Small Spaces: Dos and Don'ts

Looking to maximize the space in your home?

In small spaces storage is a key element.

In small spaces storage is a key element.

DOs

— Keep things organized. Everyday items should be easy to reach, while rarely used appliances and dry goods should be stowed away.

— Customize your nooks and crannies. If you really want to make the most of awkward spaces, hire someone to build storage units from scratch.

— Find multifunctional furniture. Whether it’s ottomans that double as coffee tables or coffee tables that double as storage, buy furniture that does twice the work.

— Turn storage into decor. Play with the colours and shapes of your storage items to create stylish patterns.

DON'Ts

— Clutter the cupboards and countertops. It doesn’t matter if it’s the bathroom, the kitchen or the living room, don’t display what isn’t in constant use.

— Be afraid to use dark colours. When done right, layered textures and rich, dark tones can create interesting shadows and depth not possible with bright hues.

—Weigh down the decor with wood. Keep the feeling light and airy with transparent and reflective surfaces, footed furniture and wall-mounted shelves.
