A sure bet that a neighbourhood has the right stuff is when Calgarians from outside the community trek in to check out its amenities.

In Edgemont, one of the city’s largest communities with more than 5,500 residences, outsiders are green with envy over its parks and pathways.

“We have over 30 kilometres of walking and bike paths, with people coming from other neighbourhoods to walk in our ravine,” says Elspeth Kirk, the Edgemont Community Association’s communications director, who moved into the neighbourhood 25 years ago and never left.

Part of Edgemont’s allure is its location on the northwestern edge of Nose Hill Park, where 11 square kilometres of natural grassland are in the middle of a City-funded revitalization area. Taking its cue from the openness of Nose Hill, a further 25 percent of Edgemont is green space — well above the 10 percent required by the City.

And, with an elevated topography that boasts views of the downtown skyline to the south and the mountains to the west, it’s no wonder new Calgarians coming from as far off as China and India choose Edgemont as their community to settle down in. Nearly 38 percent of Edgemont’s population is immigrants, making it one of Calgary’s most ethnically diverse neighbourhoods.
