Even today, Inglewood’s historical roots as Calgary’s first self-described neighbourhood can be felt in the community.

When it was first founded in 1875, Inglewood was in the perfect location — close to the trading and commerce that took place at Fort Calgary, as well as to the Bow and Elbow rivers. The community’s main street, along 9th Avenue S.E. became a hub of activity, but over the years business slowed and the neighbourhood turned into a dive as people fled to the suburbs.

But Inglewood’s small-town bone structure has been undergoing a revival for years. “It is a walkable, complete community from the past — in that all the new, sustainable communities being built are trying to imitate what Inglewood has,” says Gian-Carlo Carra, president of the Inglewood Community Association.
Ingelwood’s main drag is a hot spot for shopping and art boutiques, as well as restaurants such as Rouge, which was voted Restaurant of the Year by Avenue readers.

“We’ve got some of the best restaurants in the city and a whole smattering of other very cool food and entertainment offerings,” Carra says, referring to spots like the Inglewood Bird Sanctuary and the Sam Livingston Fish Hatchery.

In addition to that, Carra says about 47 percent of all businesses in Inglewood are owned by residents, which creates an “investment-in-the-community” vibe that can be felt throughout the neighbourhood.

“I’d be surprised if other communities were anywhere near that level,” he says.
