4 Ways to Stampede: Shannon Hawes

Just as there are 50 ways to leave your lover, there are many ways to enjoy Stampede. Four Calgarians share their Stampeding styles, secrets

Shannon Hawes, Barrel Racer and Horse Trainer

My Calgary Stampede is…

Busy. I’ve been riding horses since I was two or three years old, and I’ve been rodeoing since Grade 11. I’m usually at small-town rodeos on the weekend, as there is a rodeo circuit I follow.

The Calgary Stampede means…

Trying to take in as much of the rodeo side of things as I can. I’ve competed in various aspects in the horse world, everything from riding English to showing horses, to cutting, reigning and training. So that’s the world I love.

During the 10 days, I never miss…

The rodeo. That’s kind of what Stampede is all about for me, and where it all originated. I also check out as much of the horse events and demos around the park as I can.

Stampede fashion should…

Be authentic. The first thing I notice on someone during Stampede is their hat and boots. Invest in a good hat and a good pair of boots. Square-toed boots are big right now, as well as different kind of leathers like ostrich and crocodile. A good hat can make or break a look. Make sure it fits you well, and splurge on a good material. Forget the stereotypical Stampede “party hat” — they’re OK for going drinking, but that’s about it. Spend a little extra money and get the quality that will last you for Stampedes to come.

My favourite Stampede memory is

Watching my first parade about 17 years ago. My mom was a former Stampede Princess, and we travelled out to Calgary from British Columbia, where I grew up, to watch her ride in the parade.
