Basement Design: Dos and Don'ts

By Jaelyn Molyneux

Do

  • Plan your storage. Well-thought-out storage can hold more in less space, leaving more room for living.

  • Consider moving your laundry room out of the basement and closer to a bedroom. It is more convenient and opens up space in the basement.

  • Add in-floor heating and larger windows to make the basement more comfortable.

Don’t

  • Forget about building codes. Failing to comply could be unsafe for you and your family, and be financially damaging when it comes to resale value.

  • Skimp on lighting. It is the most important element in brightening a basement and also an easy way to add interesting design elements.

  • Underestimate how much time you will spend in your basement. This lower level can often turn into a main hangout area, so make it just as welcoming as your main floor.
