A mixture of support, accolades and encouragement is the magic recipe that keeps the employees of CBI Health Group happy and productive. The company, which has five offices throughout Calgary, and more than 2,500 employees across Canada, provides a range of rehabilitative services for people who have been injured and are looking to get back to their maximum potential.

The CBI formula for a great place to work is fairly simple. The company values its employees and encourages their individual strengths. Holding true to the theory that the whole is greater thanthe sum of its parts, CBI maximizes employee productivity by offering bonuses based on an entire clinic’s performance rather than individual efforts — so staff have to work as a team to achieve the best results.

The offices, though no-frills in look, are relaxed and help to encourage a casual work environment.

Camaraderie between staff members is vital to the company’s success. James Pan, a physiotherapist at the northeast Calgary location, has been with CBI for five years and knows first-hand the stress involved in working with injured clientele.

“It can be draining and very serious, so to still be able to have fun at work is very important,” says Pan, who enjoys the happy, laidback relationship with fellow staff.

Employees are fully invested in making sure their patients receive the best care possible. “We have an active approach to treatment and spend a lot of time educating clients to manage their disabilities,” says Pan. Also, monthly patient surveys ensure CBI always knows what it’s doing right, and what could be improved.

There is plenty of room to grow at this company, and CBI retains employees for long periods of time. Becky Barbour, a business administrator at CBI Calgary South who has been with the company for nine years, started out as areceptionist. “I am a prime example of how CBI grooms employees for leadership roles,” she says.

The employees of CBI Health are also happy to point out the company’s charitable endeavours. “We hold fundraisers, bake sales and go to communities to distribute bags to collect food, all for the Food Bank,” says Pan. All of this is in keeping with CBI’s spirit of doing good in the community.
