Delineated Faces

Woodcuts have generally been tools for printmaking, but local art provocateur Lisa Brawn creates woodcuts as art pieces in themselves. Brawn’s latest series depicts faces culled from old photographic records such as 1920s silent film cowboys, Canadian prime ministers and iconic gender archetypes like Sophia Loren and Steve McQueen.

Brawn works with different types of wood including pine, cherry and walnut, but her latest collection of chiaroscuro-esque portraits are carved in century-old Douglas fir salvaged from the Hull Block restoration on Stephen Avenue. Even more impressive is how Brawn accomplishes striking detail and a multidirectional network of graphically sinewy lines on the faces — all using a power router. To see her woodcuts, visit Axis Contemporary Art in Art Central at 100 7 Ave. S.W., or her diminutive window gallery, Museo Poco, at 924 17 Ave. S.W. For more info, visit expeditionism.com.
