The working world of stocks, numbers and finances stirs up images of buttoned-down seriousness and stress. But although the employees at GMP Capital Inc. may be busy professionals, they are also quite pampered. The company, which has three divisions in Calgary — GMP Securities L.P., GMP Private Client L.P. and Edgestone Capital Partners L.P. — makes employees feel valued above all else.

GMP fits the Calgary mould well, because of its entrepreneurial flair. Most of the employees are also shareholders in the company, so the desire to see the company flourish is not only a part of the job description, it’s a personal investment.

Grant Mutch, a branch manager who has been with GMP for a year and a half, cites this as a driving force in the company’s success. “We all have a stake in GMP, which creates a dedication that drives good results,” he says.

Also driving those good results is the personal attention the employees receive. The open-door communication policy allows all staff members to communicate ideas directly with upper management.

And the strong work ethic GMP staff lives by is rewarded frequently. Every two weeks, a massage therapist is brought in, and employees are encouraged to indulge on company time. The massages are covered by the company’s health care package, which GMP also pays for. Other treats include parties and events throughout the year, and little extras such as flowers for all female staff on Valentine’s Day.

Traci Sady, an assistant branch manager who has been with GMP Private Client for three and a half years, also emphasizes the flexibility of the workplace. “Family is so important to GMP,” she says. “They are understanding and flexible. I can leave work at 2 or 3 o’clock to drive my son to hockey and no one minds.”
