Sports and (Mostly) Leisure

More than just a Trivial Pursuit category, sports and leisure is a way of life — a life made better by modern technology.

Float like a butterfly
Wii Boxing is fun, but swinging controllers wildly in the air makes you look and feel a bit silly. Everlast has finally stepped up to add some manliness to the experience with its official Nintendo Wii Boxing Gloves (US $30). Made with synthetic leather, these 3.8-oz gloves have straps fitted to hold your Wii controllers, lending some authenticity to the boxing experience. And if you think Wii Boxing is lame, a sequel to the classic NES Punch Out was released locally on March 5. (everlast.com)

Cool runnings
Since launching a few years ago, the Nike+ system has become a must-have for runners of all experience levels. The big advantage of the SportBand ($69) is you no longer need an iPod Nano to track your runs. The bracelet along with the “shoe pod” and Nike+ compatible sneakers work in tandem. Just go running, then upload data to your computer so you can keep an eye on progress, set goals, get tips and show up your friends. (nikeplus.com)

Bleeps and blitzes
They may look just like a bunch of red dots making bleeping sounds, but Mattel’s Classic Football II handheld ($15) is pure retro goodness. If you grew up in the ’80s, this was the game that taught you football. Its genius lies in its simplicity. Run forward, backward and pass the ball. All with red dots. And bleeping. If that doesn’t get you excited, your childhood was seriously lacking. There’s also a version that connects to your TV and includes the red dot versions of Mattel Basketball and Baseball, as well. I fly like paper
A well-constructed paper plane is a marvel of modern engineering, defying gravity with grace and elegance. It truly is poetry in motion. Or at least it is if you give it a 30-mph launch from this Electric Paper Plane Launcher (US $18) from Urban Outfitters. Powered by a single AA battery, this spinning wheel launcher will give your paper masterpieces the consistent launch power they deserve, leaving you to focus on perfecting the double-folded wing. Pour it on
Beer and televised sports go together like cereal and cartoons. Technically, the v-POD stainless-steel column with Kool-Rite beer towers (US $3,050) is for commercial establishments, but if you’re renovating your rec room, you may want to consider adding one of these. Six taps, a stainless-steel finish and a built-in 10-inch LED screen will make your home bar the number-one destination for all your friends come playoff time. (micromatic.com)
