Contemporary applications including metallics, linear patterns and larger formats are popular right now, but tile is a material that has endured centuries of design trends and been incorporated into many of them.

“There is a history of tile, just like how there is a history of furniture and design,” says Beth Balcom of City Tile. Not only are original tiles still available, designers are creating new product influenced by old styles.

“If there is a period you want to reinvent in a certain room, research that period and there will be a tile specific to that style,” Balcom says.

She points to Arts & Crafts and Victorian as examples of resurging styles that originally incorporated tile into design.

Do

  • Install in-floor heating before tiling.

  • Hire a skilled tile setter who can level and lay tiles properly.

  • Minimize grout lines.

  • Install tile floors if you have large dogs. It doesn’t damage as easily as hard-wood floors.

Don't

  • Inset tile in wood unless you are prepared to be extra careful when cleaning. The two materials require different cleaning methods.

  • Install without being sure of your decision. The durability of tile also means it is difficult to remove.

  • Be afraid of mixing mediums such as glass and natural stone.
