Dan Meades, director, Vibrant Communities Calgary
Meades: “Calgarians are recognizing the importance of increasing density. In order to do that appropriately, we need transit that will take people from A to B in an effective and affordable way. I would like to see a lot more of that.”

What do you think will be different in 25 years in Calgary?
Carra: “I subscribe to the idea that we will be driving a lot less for a number of reasons: gas is going to be increasingly expensive; there will be a large number of older people who can’t drive; and young people don’t think it’s as cool to drive as they used to. Longboarding, biking, transit — that’s going to be a widespread cultural phenomenon.”
What would be the worst change over the next 25 years?
Carra: “A lot of persuasive schools of thought are concerned that the increase in energy prices will be more disruptive to the world economy. We’re going to have a lot of people who will not be able to afford the same lifestyle they have now. We have to hope for the best, and prepare for the worst.”

How will transit be different in 25 years in Calgary?
Farrell: “There will be new legs of the LRT, which will be connected partly by reintroducing the streetcar... There will also be more bike lanes and transit, so people can live without a car if they so choose. We want to build a city that isn’t so car-dependent by increasing investment in public transit areas and around transit nodes.”

What will City services and city council look like in 25 years?
Pootmans: “By 2036, city council will have an equal number of female and male City councillors and our second female mayor, and we will become more representative of our population. Calgarians will follow civic issues on their digital devices, and will be enabled to vote in plebiscites on their digital devices, improving municipal elections operations so that 98 per cent of citizens vote!”
