In 20 words or less to describe your personal style:
Fun, adventurous, edgy, whimsical, effortless, lots of personality, a mix of textures and shapes, chic with a twist, smart, inspired
What is your typical work attire?:
I am a manager in a financial organization, so, naturally, I do not enjoy unlimited freedom when dressing for work. Yet, this does not mean that my office look has to be boring! If I must wear a suit to a big meeting, I spice up my pinstripes with lemon yellow peep-toe pumps, a funky manicure, or an eye-catching glass ring. These days, when I am not in a suit, I gravitate toward high-waisted floor-grazing pants worn with feminine blouses with bell sleeves or ruffles. I wear full and pencil skirts, slim pants and dress shorts paired with cropped jackets, and lots of dresses. I have a vast collection of statement jewellery: a massive watch, chunky necklaces, funky bracelets, artisan earrings and large rings, which I often throw into the mix to add some pizzaz to neutral outfits. I like mixing naughty and nice, such as a big men’s watch and a dainty short sleeve bow-tie blouse. I like experimenting with splashes of colour and animal print, and I always wear heels. I believe in flawless skin, a great haircut (although my curly hair is difficult to contain) and polished nails, and I keep my makeup simple when I am at work, as I need people to focus on what I am saying rather than being distracted by super-shiny lips or glittery eyelids.
What is your typical weekend attire?:
Lots of sun dresses in the summer, and when the weather is cooler – my trusty True Religion or Taverniti jeans, jersey tops, cardi-wraps and cosy sweaters, and I never go anywhere without my platform wedges and a funky carry-all bag. I am also becoming addicted to my slouchy plaid pants from Mango – they are ultra-comfy and can take me from work to play depending on what they are worn with. Comfort is an essential condition for my weekend get-ups, as I need to be able to chase my four year old. Week ends are the time to have fun with clothes and to show more skin: distressed jeans, tight leopard capris and funky shirts during the day, filmy dresses, one-shoulder tops and dramatic make-up for those nights when I go out. My favourite “tough and tender” combo also gets featured on week ends as I add heavy chains to a slip dress or a chunky scarf to a delicate flutter-sleeve top.
What (or who) is your fashion inspiration?:
I do not really have a fashion icon, although I admire Sarah Jessica Parker for her attitude toward fashion: her looks are fun, fearless, experimental and always flattering. I believe that my style and my clothes should work for my body, my personality, my mood and my lifestyle – and as I get bored easily, I rotate my clothes and avoid committing to super-expensive but boring pieces often referred to as “timeless”. My only style constant is confidence. I also think that a great posture and a friendly smile are critical fashion accessories – even the most stunning designer item looks lame with stooped shoulders and a sour face. I love Canadian designers and source them out whenever possible, because this way I come across many one-of-a-kind pieces, plus it feels right to support them. Yet, my style is heavily influenced by travel, other cultures, and art. I like incorporating ethnic touches into my looks and pick up much of my jewellery and accessories when I travel. Almost every piece I own has a story behind it, like my colourful “piano scarf” hand-knitted in a tiny shop in Buenos Aires, or a gold-tone necklace bought from a chatty artist in his studio in the South of France. My choice of clothes is often inspired by city landscapes, change of seasons and nature’s colours, although even the plushest of wool scarves doesn’t help me put up with Calgary’s long winters. I trust my instincts in putting my outfits together, and I am my only critic and authority – if it feels good, I’ll wear it. I grew up in the former Soviet Union, where at the time we had little access to goods and services, and one had to be quite inventive to look good and stand out from the crowd. I try to maintain and nurture that inventive streak. I also draw much inspiration from my daughter Miriam – at four, she is amazingly artistic and creative, and unrestrained by convention and any kind of boundaries. It is so much fun to play dress-up together!
