Patisserie du Soleil
It’s a bakery, a coffee shop, a fine breakfast-lunch-and-early dinner cafe and a great community meeting spot.

Early this afternoon, Calgary Stampede president and CEO Mike Casey revealed the early plans for this summer's Stampede Centennial celebrations to a small group of local media. Casey emphasized that this was just a“sneak a peek” and that more announcements would be coming in the months ahead. Perhaps most notably, the parade marshal has not yet been named. What was revealed included a line of Roots commemorative clothing and hand bags. While...

It’s not a trait I’m particularly proud of, but I am very competitive. So competitive in fact that I don’t like to compete unless I’m sure I have a shot at winning. So when SouthCentre invited Avenue to compete in their Beat the Stylist competition, I knew I’d be putting a lot into it. The challenge was pretty simple — create an outfit using at least one element with one of fall’s top trends — safari print. However, the downside is I’m not...

Although rain pelted pancake breakfasters this morning, those at the Kensington Riverside Inn blissfully ate their way through platefulls of Chef de Cuisine Craig Bojé's amazing Lemon Ricotta Pancakes. A delightful marriage of tastes and textures, you can mix them up at home with this recipe or better yet stop by the Inn's restaurant, Chef's Table, any day and indulge. In a city known mostly for its oil and gas industries, we expect to find a lot of executives here, and we do. What we might not expect is the high number of professional theatres and playwrights the city boasts. And now, Ken Cameron (Top 40 Under 40 Alumni 2006) is bringing the seemingly disparate fields of business and theatre together. “It’s not a new idea to use theatre skills in a business context,” says Cameron. After working as a playwright, dramaturge and as the artistic director the Magnetic North Theatre Festival, Cameron has developed a...

Ken Cameron has a 20-year career in the theatre, writing plays and helping other playwrights share their ideas with audiences. With Brave Communications he shares what he’s learned on stage with business professionals who need their ideas to come across strongly when they make presentations to clients, employees and shareholders. While Brave Communications offers a series of four sessions or one-on-one coaching to help hone presentation skills, we asked him to name the number one mistake most business communicators make. “Too many messages,”...
Each year Avenue picks one Big Idea — a city changing concept or problem — to think about, write about and talk about with our Top 40 Under 40 alumni and our readers. This year’s Big Idea is sharing the stories of what Calgary is now. Calgary is a changing and growing city but too often the perception of this city from both outside and sometimes from within, is outdated. Working at a city magazine gives me and the rest of the staff at Avenue a wonderful view of the city. We know about many of the arts, cultural and community...
Update: The vote is in and they will be called councillors after the next election. Today, once again, City Council will debate changing the title Alderman to City Councillor. Alderman Dale Hodges and Alderman Shane Keating have brought forward the motion to council and hopefully the change will get made and this will be the end of the debate. Otherwise this will almost definitely keep coming back until it is changed. The argument against the change seems to be along three main points: 1) we can't change all sexist language so why change any? 2) we have a tradition...
A Registred Nurse at Sante Spa performs a chemical peel. Sante Spa has long been one of the top spa destinations in the city and in fact was Canada's first registered medical spa. But, not content to rest on its laurels, Sante has undergone a makeover itself — one very much in line with its own ethos of facial care. In other words it has spruced itself up, tidied itself up, gone with a bit of newer technology but not left its roots behind. The new Sante offers the same calming...
Gery Shubert as "Tony Martini" hosted Heritage Park's prohibition themed "Taste of History" fundraising dinner on May 1. Calgarians got out their pocket books and their party shoes on May 1 to help Heritage Park raise $35,000 at its recent "Taste of History" fundraiser. In addition to a show of singing, a thematic skit and general hillarity from host "Tony Martini" (a.k.a. Gery Shubert) guests were treated to an...
