July Amusement

Unmasked: The Final Years of Michael Jackson by Ian Halperin
Wow. That was fast. Because he's… you know… dead.
Release date: July 7

The Big Rewind: A Memoir Brought to You by Pop Culture by Nathan Rabin
Nathan Rabin just wrote a book I wish I'd written. Except it's a memoir, and I kind of only wish I lived about half of his actual life.
Release date: July 7

Against Me! – Original Cowboy
A new EP (they are calling it an EP, but eight tracks feels LPish to me) from the hardest working band in punk. (Can you tell I just finished reading The Commitments?) True story: I once played Xbox with the bass player.
Release date: July 7

Discovery – LP
Two of the best albums last year were from Vampire Weekend and Ra Ra Riot. Discovery is made up of members from both bands, yet LP, while perfectly enjoyable, doesn't seem to stack up to those albums. But props for a timely Jackson 5 cover.
Release date: July 7

Mad Men: Season Two
With several shows ending (and being cancelled), Mad Men can make a legitimate claim to being the best show currently on TV. If you haven't been watching, you should get on it before season three premieres later this summer.
Release date: July 14

Welcome to Macintosh
It's a documentary about Apple. I really don't think I need to say any more than that.
Release date: July 14

Watchmen
My wife hated this movie. I almost left her because of that. That's how good this is. Also, be sure to grab the director's cut. It's like twelve hours long.
Release date: July 21

Pushing Daisies: The Complete Second Season
You really should buy this (and the first season) on DVD. But I will never forgive you for not watching it on TV. Because now it's cancelled. And it's your fault. And I hate you.
Release date: July 21

Coraline
A wholesome and truly terrifying film. Kids openly wept in the theater they were so scared. Yet, I think it's important that every child see this movie. Adults, too.
Release date: July 21

Robot Chicken: Star Wars - Episode II
You will laugh until you pee.
Release date: July 21

This American Life: Season Two
Powerful storytelling for the liberal, upper-middle-class existence (I stole that from the Onion). I love it. For reals.
Release date: July 21

Battlestar Galactica: Season 4.5
Despite the terrible and wholly unsatisfying finale, it's still the best sci-fi series ever made. Even if you don't like sci-fi, you should give this show a shot. And with 4.5 out, you can now buy the complete series in a handy box set.
Release date: July 28

Torchwood: Children Of Earth
Instead of a full third season, Torchwood is doing a five-episode story arc on BBC this month, then releasing it all at the end of July. Despite some questionable decisions in the second season and a serious culling of the cast (you can't hate a show that will kill major characters), it's still pretty awesome.
Release date: July 28

Dollhouse: Season One
People I know and respect love this show. I tried to watch the first episode three times and couldn't get through it. Decide for yourself.
Release date: July 28

Dragonball: Evolution
Ha! I'm totally kidding. DO NOT WATCH THIS. Oh, Ernie Hudson… I feel for you, man.
Release date: July 28

Big Man Japan
There is nothing I can say about this film that the trailer can't say better. Actually, it's just kind of impossible to describe.
Release date: July 28
