Believers in the capability of the cocoa bean know the scenes well.
French actress Juliette Binoche plays the graceful and charming chocolatier who stirs it up and serves it up hot, cold, frothy, in cakes, cookies, even with a touch of chili; in the process the bosomy beauty sets off a fire storm of passion in small town France, simply by mixing up cream and cocoa with the precision of a pharmacist and the love of a chef.
The story is from the Academy Award nominated movie, Chocolat (2000), in which Johnny Depp and Binoche play two characters that delve into the dark, sensual-side of chocolate and all of its hidden powers to revive, heal and bring to life love.
If Dominique and Cindy Duby have anything to do with it, Canadians will be falling over themselves in romance of chocolate much the same way townsfolk were in the famous flick.
The husband and wife team from Richmond B.C. are the creative minds behind DC Duby Wild Sweets, a critically acclaimed chocolate studio and virtual boutique. The couple's creations are an avant-garde, obtuse and artistic take on fine sweets.
Their "CocoArt" Wild Sweets Series feature colourfully painted sets of chocolates which resemble Jackson Pollock paintings and graffiti art. The Wild Sweets Drink Kit Series incorporate spice and fruit oil infusions into dark cocoa mixes. And with other flavours such as Element: vanilla bean mixed with maldon salt, sesame wakame and praline, and Fusion: a blend of dulce de leche gianduja and vanilla-smoked almonds, one can only imagine what these two confectionery creators will think of next.
