Patisserie du Soleil
It’s a bakery, a coffee shop, a fine breakfast-lunch-and-early dinner cafe and a great community meeting spot.
Quick update for you all. Tonight the FilmRacing team will be getting together to use some of the prizes that we took home. Namely, we're going to cash in a few movie passes to the Cochrane Movie House and make a night of it. Nice drive, good meal, great company and a movie. That's the plan at least.
Also, I've submitted my headshot and resume to Verb Theatre, a local company that stresses building bridges and conversations between communities. This was highlighted in their work with The Mustard Seed Drama Society on Oedipus Evolving. They have an audition call out for their next production of Carole Frechette's John and Beatrice.
You know that headshot I have on this blog? The black and white job where I'm all looking welcoming but intense... I want to use the word magnanimous, "actions for noble purposes". Well, a rule of thumb is that you should always look like the headshot you're handing out, makes sense right?
I had enough of strangers trying to get my attention calling out "Miss... Mam? Miss? Mam? Sir? Miss?" to the back of my head. The hair was getting way too long, and as soon as someone described it to me as Farah Fawcet hair, it was time for a cut.
What bugged me is that I had just gotten my headshots done, and my new passport (TSA guy in Las Vegas looked at my photo, back to me, back to the photo and said “was it time to get a real job hippy?” Yeah, no shit.)
But it had to be done. I turned to Christy down at Ymay Hair Studio on 17th to update my serious 90's grunge hair into something more modern. I told her short. She told me it was going to be a huge change and that I need to be gentle stepping into it. She was right. Going with a length that she recommended and changing the part and fall of my hair has changed the look completely. Instead of "Miss? Mam?" from behind I've been getting "Like, Jakie Chan or maybe Bruce Lee..."
It's a nice studio, great location, but it's the people that make it worth the trip. If you're looking for something a little more daring and people that know how to pull it off, give Ymay Hair Studo a shot. I enjoyed the experience to no end. The biggest positive for me was that there was a two way conversation about the cut. Christy didn't just grab the reins and go after it with her own eye, nor did she just bow to whatever stupid idea of "style" I had. I know that other salons try to stress the importance of that type of relationship with a client, but Ymay was the first to pull it off with me.
So yeah, I have to figure out if I can keep handing out these headshots with my long hair in them, or if I need to pony up and have new ones done right away... I go into rehearsal for the next gig in a month, and want to find an agent for Film/TV work before that.
