Patisserie du Soleil
It’s a bakery, a coffee shop, a fine breakfast-lunch-and-early dinner cafe and a great community meeting spot.
Stina Persson, world renowned pop-illustrator, is bringing her vibrant works to Calgary.
The Swedish artist is known for her ad design work for Coca Cola, Absolut Vodka, Sony Music and DKNY as well as her editorial contributions to publications such as Harper's Bazaar, Elle UK, Marie Claire and many more.
The city's chic gallery walls are not where this celebrated artist is choosing to display her Calgary debut. In fact, Persson's exhibit is accessible to the masses. It can be viewed via taking a stroll through the halls of Market Mall.
The colourful, spring inspired illustrations and interactive displays of birds, flowers and fauna are scattered throughout the building. This whimsical art-work leads to the Avant Garden (located center mall) which features about 70 per cent real flora, including mums, greenery and Kolanchoe. The Garden is a collaboration of art, fashion, and plant-life.
While beautiful in its own right, the grand exhibit of imaginative splendor isn't just meant for show. The Avant Garden was also built to support The Children's Cottage Society of Calgary, a family crises centre which helps vulnerable children with no where else to go. The society supplies overnight childcare in emergency situations, for a maximum of 3 days, each time a family needs to use the service. Several up-and-coming events including Market Mall's pancake breakfast, held during the Calgary Stampede, and a soon to be announced radiothon, which will take place in the Avant Garden, will aim to raise funds for the family crises center.
A feature piece of the Avant Garden is the Wishing Well, stationed at the mall's south entrance. The water-feature is designed around a magnificent, oversized flower. All coins thrown into the fountain will be donated to the Children's Cottage Society of Calgary, people may also donate online at www.marketmallwishingwell.ca.
Patty Kilgallon, executive director of the Children's Cottage Society, says they society is looking forward to using a portion of the donated funds to upgrade the cottage's outdoor garden and play area.
"This money will help to bring spring to the Children's Cottage by enabling us to plant flowers and improve our garden area," she said.
"We want children to feel safe, comfortable and happy in our garden. We will also be able to do things like add new outside toys."
The Avant Garden will be in blossom until Monday, May 24.
