Finding The City's Best
Despite the much ballyhooed rising popularity of the macaron, the sweet treat of our dreams is still the cupcake.
But which cupcake? There are so many options to choose from.
Leaving aside the pedestrian offerings of supermarket chains, the committed culinary explorers here at Avenue's taste test dining room underwent a grueling four courses of cupcake eating to determine which of the city's chocolate-strawberry cupcakes developed by the local cupcake-only shops is the best.
The things we go through for you, our readers!
What we tested: chocolate cake with strawberry icing cupcakes from Bliss & Co. Cupcakes and Desserts, Buttercream Bake Shoppe, Crave Cookies and Cupcakes and The Little Cupcake Shoppe.
Marks for looks: Bliss and Buttercream tied with three votes each for best-looking cupcake - the votes were split entirely along gender lines with the men preferring Bliss and women preferring Buttercream. There's a joke in there somewhere, but we'll just leave it you to supply. Crave and The Little Cupcake Shoppe each got one vote.
Marks for cake: The Little Cupcake Shoppe pulled slightly ahead with three votes. Bliss and Crave tied for second with two votes each and Buttercream got one vote.
Marks for icing: Bliss may not have taken the cake, but they took the icing and ran away with all the votes in this category for their light icing packed with real strawberry flavour.
Overall: Bliss was the big winner overall. Comments included, "delicious," "creamy" and "natural." Buttercream placed a strong second.

Congrats to Bliss! They've been our hands-down fave since they opened. I LOVE Bliss' icing too - so nice to have a real icing that's not cloyingly sweet!
