Double downward dog
If you’re like me, you are constantly choosing how to parcel out your time to everyone in your family and still fit in a decent workout. Strolls to the playground don’t cut it, and I’m not one to do that “playground routine” that I have heard was developed by a couple of moms who obviously don’t mind looking like fools.
When my daughters’ bedtime changed and we found ourselves staring at our eight-year-old for an extra hour each evening, I started inviting her to do my yoga DVD with me. At first the distraction of her flipping around beside me chipped away at the peaceful ambiance, but those rough spots have smoothed out, and now our Pranayama is perfect, not to mention our tree poses.
DVDs are a great, cheap start, but I was thrilled to see that the Shawnessy YMCA has mother and daughter yoga classes, available to both members and non-members. The focus of the class is to bring busy mothers and daughters together for communication, stretching and strengthening. Given how frequently I see those little eight-year-old eyes rolled at me these days, I’m all for improving that communication, not to mention each of us getting some tips on our poses.
The minimum age for daughters is eight, and the current session runs Monday or Tuesday evenings from 6:30-7:30. Participants are asked to bring their own mats. Cost per session is $165.00 for non-member adult and $83.00 for non-member youth under 17.
I have also heard of some other mother and daughter yoga classes around town in years past, so it’s worth checking the Calgary Parks and Recreation Guide or checking with your local yoga studio. The Shawnessy Y also offers family yoga, so I’ll take my husband’s participation in a single yoga class two years ago as rampant enthusiasm, and sign us all up for the next session. It’ll be a nice, um, surprise, don’t you think?
