New Releases for January 12, 2010

THIS WEEK’S PICK

Moon
If I was the sort of person who made year-end lists, Moon would have finished fourth for best movies of 2009.

MUSIC

Vampire Weekend – Contra
I’ve been listening to this album on repeat for about a day. I’m still not sure if I like it. I don’t think I like it as much as their last one, at least. (Probably because there are no songs about punctuation on this one.) And I really hate the song “California English.” Like, a lot. It’s awful.

Ringo Starr – Y Not
Anytime a Beatle releases a new album it seems like something worth mentioning. Even if it is only Ringo.
CD | iTunes

OK Go – Of the Blue Colour of the Sky
For a band that became famous more for their dancing and YouTube savvy than their music, this album is pretty solid. And poppy. And fun. Whatever.

MOVIES

The Hurt Locker
This topped a lot of other people’s best-of-2009 lists. It continues to sit in the third spot on my “Movies I Really Should Take Some Time to See” list.

Big Fan
There is something extremely unsettling about this movie. I mean that in a good way.

TV

The Simpsons: The Complete 20th Season
When they finally stop making The Simpsons, the complete series boxset will weigh about seven hundred pounds and cost more than Avatar.
DVD | Blu-ray

ER: The Complete Twelfth Season
What I’d really like is ER: The Sixteenth Season. Because, you know, there isn’t one. And no other medical drama has come close to being as good. (Side note: Have you ever tried to type “Twelfth”? It’s harder than it looks.)
