New Releases for January 19, 2010

THIS WEEK’S PICK
Catherine MacLellan – Water in the Ground
Right now you’re probably thinking “Hey! You’re only including this album because you went to high school with Catherine MacLellan and may have had a mild crush on her for a good portion of grade eleven. And this album isn’t even new. It’s been out for a year, but only got added to iTunes this week.” To this I can only respond by saying, 1) I deny nothing! 2) Bite me and go get your own blog.

MUSIC
Spoon – Transference
If I wrote for Rolling Stone I would use the headline “Austin Band Releases Great Album, No One is Surprised.” Because they are from Austin. And only awesome bands seem to come from there. Get it?

Eels – End Times
Didn’t the Eels just have a new album last year? Yes. But this one is less happy because it’s about E’s divorce. Or at least that’s what Wikipedia tells me. (Ever notice how many albums I review without actually talking about the music? Weird, right?)

MOVIES
Gamer
The plot to Gamer is quite easily one of the dumbest ever conceived, yet somehow this isn’t the worst movie ever made starring Gerard Butler.
Amazon | iTunes
The Invention of Lying
The plot to The Invention of Lying is easily one of the most brilliant ever conceived, and it is the third best movie ever made starring Jennifer Garner (depending on how you define the word “starring”).
Amazon | iTunes
Kingdom of the Spiders
The 70’s classic starring William Shatner versus a bunch of spiders finally comes to DVD. Amen.
Amazon
TV
Weeds: Season 5
Things you need to know to understand the awesomeness of this show: 1) It’s from Showtime, who currently make TV that’s substantially better than anything HBO is doing, 2) Mary Louise Parker is smokin’ hot as evidenced by her naked Esquire photoshoot, 3) It’s about pot, and 4) Kevin freaking Nealon!!!

thirtysomething – The Complete Second Season
Someone once told me this show was absolutely groundbreaking. Because apparently before thirtysomething, no one had thought of boring TV shows.

BOOKS
Paul Quarrington
My favorite author, Paul Quarrington, passed away this week. Which is sad. If you haven't read his books, I highly recommend Whale Music, King Leary, Logan in Overtime, Galveston and The Ravine. Also, all of the others.
