Calgary has long been a city of entrepreneurs, dreamers, schemers
and workaholics.
The fact that for generations people have come here for an opportunity, to get ahead, to find their fortune, means Calgary has developed a culture that values ingenuity, mixed with a healthy dose of elbow grease.
So what does it take to get to the top?
Determination, hard work and more than a bit of luck, according to this year’s class of the Top 40 Under 40.
Their work touches all aspects of life in this city, from government and community activism, to health and education, to the arts and culture and to energy and industry, not to mention law, finance and sport and recreation.
We received more than 200 nominations for this year’s Top 40 Under 40. We narrowed that down to about 90 and sent those nominations to our judging panel of former Top 40s and local business experts.
Our judges included Jim Button, Top 40 Class of 1999 and vice-president of marketing for Big Rock Breweries; Stephanie Felesky, community volunteer and corporate director; Steven Koles, Top 40 Class of 2008 and president and CEO of Hemisphere GPS; Lois Mitchell, chair of the Calgary Chamber of Commerce and president of Amherst Consultants; Pommashea Noel-Bentley, Top 40 Class of 2005 and vice president of United Way Vancouver; and the editorial staff of Avenue.
They went through the shortlist ranking, researching and debating until we narrowed the list.
