On Wednesday afternoon, construction on St Patrick’s Island came to a close. The 12.5-hectares park has a natural wetland area, an amphitheatre for year-round performances, a playground, locally made benches and a refurbished bridge. And in the winter, Calgarians can make use of the tobogganing hill and marshmallow pit.
The park is scheduled to open today, but if you can’t make it down, take a virtual tour of the area.
The East Village might be getting an office building
FRAM Building Group from Ontario is looking into the possibility of constructing an office building in Calgary’s East Village. The building would be nine storeys, 122,000 square feet and would be known as the Q Block. If it goes forward, the building would open in 2017.
This same group is behind First and Verve, new condo towers in the East Village.
More brain research will be happening in Calgary
This week, the University of Calgary received $39.1 million through the Government of Canada’s Canadian Institutes of Health Research for health research. Twelve research projects will benefit from the funding, many of which are focusing on brain and mental health research. Not only will this lead to enhanced health care for Canadians, the funding will attract top minds to Calgary.

Between April 2014 and April 2015, Calgary gained 25,721 new Calgarians. That makes it the third largest year of population growth with a population growth percentage of just under 3 per cent. Clearly Calgary is still a desirable place to live and work.

The Inglewood Bird Sanctuary has almost fully reopened
It’s been closed ever since it was hit hard by the 2013 flood. But after a little over two years of renovations, the park was partially reopened to the public this Thursday. Most of the trails are open although parts are still closed as clean up efforts continue. Its partial reopening on July 30 was ahead of schedule.
