5 Pies to Celebrate Pi Day

March 14 (3.14) is Pi Day so celebrate by having a slice or two.

Who doesn’t think of mathematical formulae when they’re eating dessert? For those of us who don’t do this on a regular occurrence, March 14 is the perfect excuse to contemplate the infinite power of pi.

There are a few traditional ways to acknowledge this day. Pi Day is commonly observed by eating lots of pie, throwing pies at others and joining in a philosophical debate where the significance of the number pi is discussed.

We prefer the first option. Here are five pies worth sampling this Saturday, March 14.

Blackfoot Truck Stop Diner

Go big or go home. Choose a slice of the mile-high lemon meringue pie. After all, its sheer volume perfectly symbolizes the numerical volume that is pi. A slice of this puffy, lemony pie is just $4.

Bliss and Co. Cupcakes and Desserts

This is the kind of pie you eat by yourself (we fully endorse pies that are baked for consuming solo). These cream pies are just four inches in diameter and are $4.95 each. Try the coconut cream or get there early and purchase the banana-chocolate-caramel cream pie.

Crave Cookies and Cupcakes

Cupcakes might be its specialty, but the made-to-order seasonal apple pies are also worth a special mention. This pie is made with Pink Lady apples, cinnamon and generous scoops of brown sugar. And the flakey, buttery double crust? It’s transcendental – just like pi. Call ahead to make sure this pie will be ready for you on March 14. Buy the whole pie for $28 or a little pie for $4.25.

Pearson’s Berry Farm at the Crossroads Farmer Market

Go for a slice of the Saskatoon rhubarb pie, or if the personal pie is more your style, a homemade butter tart. Both are particularly Albertan choices and desserts well worth indulging in. These pies are all baked fresh, which is probably why they are considered to be some of the best in Alberta.

Santorini Greek Taverna

Think of Santorini’s bougatsa as a Greek pie. It’s got light, flaky pastry, it is filled with sweet, semolina custard and it’s served warm with a light dusting of icing sugar. And it’s only $5.50. A delicious choice, but it’s a choice that, on Pi Day, might seem counterintuitive to some. But pi is an irrational number so why not go against the grain with an unconventional choice?
