Best Mexican Restaurants

Where to find the best tacos, enchiladas and quesadillas in the city.

1. Native Tongues

Native Tongues came onto Calgary’s culinary scene in 2015 with a bang. With a modern take on Mexican street food, this upscale restaurant has a taco focus that the city was clearly craving. The Masa is made from scratch, and you can fill the tortillas with the works: pork, chorizo, refried beans and beef tongue. They also carry one of the largest selections of Mexican spirits in Calgary, so if you have enough, you might just start to believe you’re in Mexico City.

2. El Charrito Taqueria

For a taste of Jalisco, Mexico here in Calgary, El Charrito’s tacos are a must. They’re stuffed with beef, chicken or pork, then double-wrapped in two soft corn tortillas to keep every bite in your hands and not your lap. But tacos aren’t all you’ll find here – they serve up chile rellenos, enchiladas, tortas and quesadillas, too.

3. La Vida Loca

With a lively patio facing 17th Avenue S.W. and terra cotta-coloured walls inside, La Vida Loca is as close to a Mexican escape you can get to inside the city. With delicious eats, like the fish tacos and shrimp ceviche, live music on the weekends and all the Corona you could ask for, it’s no wonder the patio is packed every summer.
