This story is part of our Builder Basic to Custom Condo series, which follows owners Ryan Massel and his partner Rob as they customize their 820 square-foot new condo in the Drake. They don’t move any walls, but they do come up with some creative solutions to common problems. They do it all with the help of Alykhan Velji contractor Gerald Febrowski. The Challenge
Condo builders are required to follow a minimum code when it comes to electrical placement. And many construct just that way – fulfilling only the minimum.
Often, rooms are left short changed when it comes to electrical outlets or hardwired ceiling fixtures.
The open concept living/dining area of our floor plan was completed with one hardwired fixture, presumably located closest to where a dining room table would be. This left the living room in the dark.

The Solution
Adding floor lamps to illuminate the area was a consideration, but because of the small square footage floor space was at a premium.
Instead, a lightbox was added.
The team at Quintaro helped actualize the design.
Lightboxes have always been a popular way to call attention to store windows with photos of seasonally dressed models or the newest product illuminated for all shoppers to see. In this case, the retail sales tool was turned into a sleek art piece.
The Result
The super slim profile is unimposing. It adds personality and light into a small space and plugs in to the wall outlet.
The image is “Poolside Gossip” by Slim Aarons, a famed photographer who loved to capture the casual beauty, architectural brilliance and luxe lifestyle of Palm Springs.
The vibrant colours and playful atmosphere were a perfect tie-in for the mid-century modern glam of the space. When illuminated, the lightbox throws a sunny light which keeps the space bright and airy no matter what time of day.
