Where: Farms and ranches across Alberta
Think of this as a giant open house. Dozens of farms and ranches across Alberta open their gates and invite people to stop by and learn about what they do. It's a good opportunity for a road trip with a few stops along the way. Close to Calgary, you can visit the Calgary Stampede's OH Ranch near Longview for tours and kids activities like barrel racing and rope making. Poplar Bluff Organics near Carseland has wagon rides into the fields where the vegetables are grown. Most of the tours and open houses are free and Open Farm Days also features culinary events like long table dinners for a fee.
When: Friday, August 17, 7 p.m.
Where: Esker Foundation, 1011 9 Ave. S.E.
The Esker Foundation has a regular rotation of free events for adults and kids that complement its current exhibits. On Friday evening you can tour Anna Korma's exhibit Book of Abandoned Details and then stay for a discussion with Stash's Veronica Murphy on how to take your crafting to the next level. Bring your own supplies and project to craft-along as you chat. If you are looking for a family activity, Master Class for Families is on Sunday at 1 p.m. The hands-on workshop is for kids ages five to 10 and the adult that is with them. Register online for both events.
