Our Ultimate Guide to the Calgary Pride Festival

The annual Calgary Pride Festival is from August 23 to September 2, 2019.

Photograph by Robin Laurenson for Calgary Pride.

For 11 days at the end of August and start of September each year, Calgary is taken over by the celebration of LGBTQ+ pride, culminating with the Calgary Pride Parade, organized by Calgary Pride. Throughout the city, you can find events from extravagant parties to introspective panels. From dusk ’till dawn, there will certainly be a way to celebrate your pride. The choice is yours. How will you choose to experience the Calgary Pride Festival?

Here are options if you want a classic Pride experience or if you want to focus on drag, eating and drinking, learning, partying, sweating or shopping.

Classic

Did you know the first Calgary Pride Parade was held in 1990 and that many attendees wore paper bags over their head for fear of being recognized as gay? Since then, LGBTQ+ rights in Alberta have made strides, and the community continues to do so to this day. Here’s the classic celebration of pride.

Drag

The art of drag is a huge part of pride, and for good reason. Drag is a performance that has been happening for decades, if not centuries, in the community. Drag queens were on the front lines of many important LGBTQ+ moments in history, including the Stonewall riots. Enjoy pride by watching a number of drag performances and checking out events with drag kings and queens.

Eat and Drink

There’s nothing about eating and drinking directly related to pride festivities, unless you’re going to a drag brunch, taking over the patio at a bar with other LGBTQ+ folks or supporting a good cause.
