What to Do in the Mountains in February 2018

From alpine dining to wildlife watching, this is what’s going down in the mountains near Calgary this month.

Show up for Trivia Night at the Waldhaus

The Waldhaus Pub at the Fairmont Banff Springs does a weekly Trivia Night starting at 7 p.m. on Thursdays. Show up well beforehand to get in a skate on the picturesque ice rink the Springs builds on the grounds just below the Waldhaus during the cold-weather months.

Do dinner and a snowshoe at Castle Mountain Resort

Castle Mountain Resort‘s Full Moon Snowshoe and Fine Dining Experience starts with a ride up the Huckleberry Chairlift at last chair, followed by a guided snowshoe walk back down to the base area (headlamps provided) for a meal in the resort’s day lodge. The night is capped off with a bonfire and marshmallow roast. There’s an event this Friday, February 2 and the next one after that is on Friday, March 2.

Savour Okanagan Wines at the Post Hotel

The Post Hotel in Lake Louise is renowned for its wine program, which is showcased by the Post’s winemaker dinner series. While many of the 2018 series events are already sold out, tickets are currently still available for the event on Friday, February 9 featuring wines by CheckMate Artisanal Winery from B.C.’s Okanagan Valley. Of course, you’ll also want to book a room.

Celebrate the Good Old Hockey Game in Canmore

The town of Canmore is hosting Rogers Hometown Hockey on Saturday, February 10 and Sunday, February 11. The Canmore edition of the travelling hockey festival will feature kid-friendly activities, appearances by NHL alumni Ryan Smyth, Brendan Morrison and Lanny McDonald, pancake breakfasts, an outdoor game played by local minor hockey teams and, of course, the live pre-game broadcast leading up to the Flames-Islanders match-up (5 p.m. on Sunday, February 11).

 

Eat Ribs and Watch Snowmobile Craziness in Fernie

The Fernie Snowmobile Association‘s Sledfest kicks off on Friday, February 16 with a barbecue rib dinner and screenings of the Thunderstruck sled films at the Griz Bar at Fernie Alpine Resort ($50 ticket). Stick around for the snow drag races starting at 11 a.m. on Saturday, February 17 at 1800 Railway Avenue in Fernie (admission $10; under 14 free).

Enter a Fat Bike Race at the Canmore Nordic Centre

The Grizzly Fat Bike Marathon and Relay race takes place Sunday, February 18 at the Canmore Nordic Centre Provincial Park. The 36-kilometre race (four laps of the Nordic Centre’s nine-km fat-bike-single-track loop) can be done in solo or two-person-relay categories. Race fees are $100 for solo competitors; $180 per team. Do Après-ski Yoga at Sunshine Village

You can cap off your day of skiing or snowboarding at Sunshine Village on Friday, February 23 with an hour of free yoga at the Sunshine Mountain Lodge (the on-hill hotel). The Roxy Yoga Sessions is an après-ski series that runs from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. in the hotel’s flex room. The yoga is offered on a first-come-first-served model and features goodies and refreshments for participants. No worries about getting stranded up there as the gondola runs until 10:30 p.m. on Fridays. If you miss this month’s event, you can catch the next one on Friday, March 16.

Sit at the Chef’s Table at Buffalo Mountain Lodge

Buffalo Mountain Lodge in Banff is hosting a chef’s table dinner in its Sleeping Buffalo Lounge on Friday, Feb. 23. The interactive three-course meal with wine pairings is limited to 20 tickets, and ticket holders are eligible for a 40-per cent discount on their accommodations (a good idea what with the wine pairing and all).

Take a Drawing Workshop at the Banff Park Museum

The Drawn to Nature series of free drawing workshops is presented by staff and artists from the Banff Centre in venues throughout the community. The 2018 series has local Indigenous knowledge keepers and elders involved with leading the workshops. The next Drawn To Nature workshop is Friday, February 23 at 7 p.m. at the Banff Park Museum National Historic Site. All ages and experience levels are invited to participate and drawing materials are provided. Contact the Banff Centre’s Public Programs department to register.

Enjoy an Elevated Dinner Experience at Mt. Norquay

The Starlight Dinners at Mt. Norquay are five-course meals with wine pairings at the ski resort’s Cliffhouse Bistro, a cozy fireside dining spot at 7,000 feet. Getting to the venue is a bonus thrill, as guests are ferried up through steep alpine terrain on a double chairlift that offers a birds-eye view of the lights of the Banff townsite below. The dinners include a welcome glass of Champagne and appetizers, with the meal served long-table style to the dulcet stylings of local musician Alanna J. Brown. See Banff’s Wildlife After Dark

If you want to see Banff’s winter wildlife, your best bet is to join this guided group walk on Saturday, February 24. The walk participants and Parks Canada staff guides meet at the Banff Train Station at 6:30 p.m. and set out from there along Fenland Trail. Register in advance in person at the Parks Canada Visitor Centre on Banff Avenue by noon on the day of the walk. Group size is limited to 12 participants and headlamps are provided (the walk may be cancelled in the event of poor weather). For more information call 403-762-1550.
