We wanted to know the top wedding-related businesses in and around Calgary and we knew that weddings are often planned based on word-of-mouth recommendations and advice from trusted friends. So, in 2020, Avenue Calgary launched its first Best Wedding Services ballot as a way to hear from our audience and community partners about their favourites.
The nomination round is over and the voting round will run through September. Here are answers to some of our most frequently asked questions. If you have a question that you don’t see answered here, please contact us through this form.
Where is it?
The ballot is on AvenueCalgary.com/BestWeddingServices.
When is it?
The voting period is September 1, 2020, to September 30, 2020. The winners will be shared online and in Avenue‘s print issue in January.
How were businesses selected for each category?
The list is generated by audience input. Between July 13, 2020 and August 10, 2020, Avenue readers nominated their favourite wedding-related businesses and services in dozens of categories. Nearly 9,000 people participated, providing more than 25,000 nominations.
When the nominations closed, businesses with the most nominations in each category advanced to the voting round.
Why is there a different number of nominated businesses in each category?
For some categories, there were several businesses that were very close in the number of nominations they received. In those cases, all of the businesses that were close advanced. For other categories, the number of businesses that advanced is related to the volume of nominees. Categories that had a high volume of interest have more businesses shortlisted than categories that may not have been as popular.
How will the winners be chosen?
The business with the most number of votes in a category will be selected as the Best Wedding Service in Calgary in that category.
How many times can I vote?
You can vote once per day in each category.
When will I know the results?
The results will be announced on AvenueCalgary.com and in Avenue’s print issue in January.
Why does it include businesses outside of Calgary?
Avenue Calgary is a city magazine that supports local businesses, but we know our community includes the surrounding area. And, in particular, we know that Calgarians planning a celebration want to know businesses both in and around the city. We accepted nominations for businesses close by in Southern Alberta and the Rocky Mountains.
Why do I need to enter my email address to vote?
It helps us protect against potential voter fraud. The system we use is triggered when an email is submitted that may not be valid. Those email addresses are reviewed and eliminated if they can’t be verified. We will not send you any emails unless you specifically opt-in to receive them.
Did a business have to advertise in the magazine to advance to voting or be chosen as a winner?
No. No purchase is required to participate in the competition or to win the competition. Our goal is to engage our audience and community partners for input on the best wedding services.
For interested businesses, we are not shy in telling you that advertising on Avenue Calgary is the best way to remind the voters about your business and ask for their votes.
Also, building this competition and developing the content and promotion around it, takes a lot of time and money. We wouldn’t be able to do it without our advertisers.
What do I do if I want to advertise?
What are enhanced listings and why would I want one?
Enhanced listings allow you to add an image and/or more text to your business listing. It also creates a dedicated URL that you can share. If you are interested in more information about enhanced listings or in purchasing one, please fill out this form and we will be in touch soon.
Why can’t you give the enhanced listings away?
The $100 cost of an enhanced listings helps us cover the costs of doing this competition, including the production work to put that enhanced listing online.
